Description |
Minister John G. Powers (February 28th, 1950 - November 5th, 2019), also known as "Butterfly Man" or "Bug Man" was a resident of Kitchener, Ontario, and the Founder of the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory.
Since the age of 9, John studied and collected butterflies and moths from around the world. Over John's life, he had a personal collection of more than 8,000 specimens, of the world's rarest butterflies from over 125 countries. John also held the Guinness World Record for owning the largest moth - an Owlet Moth with a 12.16-inch (308 mm) wingspan found in Brazil in 1934. In 1972, John designed a traveling butterfly exhibit called "Flying Jewels" to depict butterflies and moths as the regal wings complementing nature's precious gems.
John created cabinets for his butterfly and moth collection, and each cabinet had a central focus/theme that featured hundreds of artists, cartoonists, singers, actors, scientists, sports celebrities, and government leaders, who are in some way associated with the word, symbol or use of a real butterfly.
He personally wrote to each person (featured in this auction) and send along a white card and asked for a personal autograph, dated with a brief comment. Sometimes the celebrity would also include a promotional photograph.
This sale features the personal correspondence between John and famous celebrities, and any relative information that John had about each person and items that were given back to John in the process (ex. Stamps, extra signed letters, etc.). Within each lot, we have scanned autographs, photographs, artifacts found in each person's folder that John had organized.
